StoryCorps

StoryCorps is a public service organization that helps people tell the important stories from their lives. People share their experiences, and the stories are preserved for others to know about some of the amazing, sad and happy things that happen around the world. If you look around this site, you are sure to find stories that make you happy or make you cry. Many of the stories are about small things, but they all give you something to think about.

Chris & Gabe Lopez
In this true story, Chris (mother) and Gabe (child) are talking together. Gabe was born a girl, but she always felt like a boy. Now the child knows that she is really a he. In other words, s/he is transgender. S/he was always worried about what Chris would think if she learned the truth.

More stories ...
1. Julio Diaz - a man talks about his experience when he was robbed by a teenager
2. Bonnie & Myra Brown - a girl talks with her mentally disabled mom
3. Ron Ruiz - a New York City bus driver who remembers one passenger
4. Connie & Blanca Alvarez - Blanca Alvarez was a poor immigrant to the U.S. from Mexico
5. Maurice Rowland & Miguel Alvarez - an amazing story about two guys who refused to abandon some elderly patients when their assisted-living center was shut down
6. Mary Ellen Noone - a rather horrifying story of discrimination in the South in the early 1900s
7. Beverly Eckert - possibly the saddest love story you will ever hear; about the 9/11 disaster
8. The Bookmobile - an inspiring story about how books changed a poor girl's life
9. The Saint of Dry Creek - a great story about a farmer who accepts his gay son and gives him some advice
10. Traffic Stop - a scary story of discrimination in the U.S.
11. No more questions! - Just a nice story about an old Chinese grandma and her memories
12. 1st Squad, 3rd Platoon - a sad story of a soldier who survived a bombing in Iraq
13. The Nature of War - about an American soldier who became friends with 2 Iraqi boys
14. Making It - an inspirational story of a poor kid who worked hard; no script, and the CC voice recognition subtitles have many errors, so try to listen!
15. A Good Man - a boy is kicked out of his home because he's gay, and he later reconnects with his brothers and sister
16. The Road Home - a homeless alcoholic gets some help from a kind man
17. To R. P. Salazar, with Love - a typo leads to true love on the other side of the world
18. Germans in the Woods - a soldier shoots an enemy soldier and can never forget it
19. Sunday at Rocco's - a weekly family gathering ends when an old building is torn down
20. Double Major - a single father tells how he raised his daughter while going to college

Joyce's Neighborhood - a story about a nice mom

If you don't like any on the list, got to StoryCorps and find one you like! Click on Stories. If you want an animation, there's a tab for that.

Watch one video and make a brief presentation about the story. It's OK if there are spoilers.

If you like these stories, please read and listen to more! There are also podcasts, so you can download the stories and listen to them on your smartphone. The stories have scripts, too, so they good study materials. They're short, but they have a lot of impact.

TOEIC, TOEFL and Other Proficiency Tests

As a general rule, students who want to improve their English should read for pleasure (anything that's interesting or enjoyable!) rather than study for tests, but some students really want to study test questions with an answer key so they can evaluate their own progress. The tests and test practice sites below will help you study for standardized tests.

TOEIC (Test of English for International Communication) tests your English ability for the purpose of working at an international business. Knowledge of business and workplace vocabulary, good listening ability, and the ability to read fast are essential. The highest possible score is 990.

TOEIC is administered in Japan by the IIBC. Here's their site: IIBC website

TOEIC Bridge is an easier version of TOEIC. The regular TOEIC test is aimed at intermediate to advanced English learners and is a little difficult for many beginning English learners. TOEIC Bridge is a way to get started with TOEIC and begin to understand what TOEIC tests are like.

TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) tests your English ability for the purpose of entering an American university. General and academic vocabulary, good listening ability, and the ability to read and write at a university level are essential. The highest possible score is 120. (Japanese Wikipedia page for TOEFL).

TOEIC and TOEFL tests are both developed and administered by Educational Testing Service (ETS), a private non-profit organization that specializes in aptitude testing (能力検定).

American Public School Language Arts (Reading) Practice
As in Japan, schools in the USA have standardized tests for public school children to evaluate their math and language arts progress. Tests are organized by grade level. Below are some links to Language Arts practice exercises for all the grade levels.

Hint: Start with Grade 1; it's not as easy as you might think! This site is not interactive, but you can read the passages, write your answers on a piece of paper, then check the answers at the bottom of the page.

SAT & PSAT
American high school students usually take the SAT (Scholastic Assessment Test) to get a score of their Math and Reading ability to send to the university they hope to attend. This test has a similar purpose to Japan's "センター試験", now "大学入学共通テスト". Younger high school students, such as 9th & 10th graders, often take the PSAT (Preliminary SAT) to practice for the SAT. Here are some links to online PSAT practice tests and exercises (by Mometrix). (Japanese Wikipedia page for SAT).

Week 9 - Report Writing Time

Everyone needs to complete reports. You can finish this week and next week. I hope some of you will send me a report to check soon. (But please do all the steps!)

On Tuesday (Nov. 15) and Thursday (Nov. 17), I will be in the classroom, but you don't have to come unless you need help. To get attendance, you can ...
a) come to the classroom (on time) or ...
b) send Kevin a Line message at the start of class saying, "Hi. I understand what to do. I'm working on my report at home. I will send you my completed report soon. Sincerely, Hanako." [If you already sent me your report, you can write that instead.]

There will be no class lesson. I will just help people who have questions with their report. If no one comes to the classroom in the first 20 minutes, I will probably return to my office in Bld. 6 (room 121).

If you don't finish and you don't ask for my help, you are on your own. You may not pass the seminar. Good luck next year with a different teacher.

7) paste your bibliography into your report
8) have all of this ready for Kevin to check in class on a classroom PC*
* I want to see this on a PC, not on your smart phone!
9) follow Kevin's formatting instructions (in class)

  3. Select all. (Ctrl +A).
  4. Choose font; Times New Roman 14
  5. Make all letters black.

  • Your student number and name in Romaji.
  1. Select all.
  2. Increase left margin 1 cm.
  3. Change headings to Heading 2, subheading to Heading 3
  • Don't worry about the font at this time.
  1. Insert page numbers (top right).

Smart Quotes

Please check your report for smart quotes and smart apostrophes.

When you copy and paste text from a blog, you probably get the 'dumb' version (top in red). Your quotation marks and apostrophes should look like the ones at the bottom (in green). Please check your paper and be sure you have smart quotes and smart apostrophes every time. It's trouble to check one by one, but please do it.

You may be able to use the 'find and replace' function, though some people may have trouble doing this. But you should try, as it can be much faster. Notice that the left smart quotes always have a space before them (but not after), while the smart quotes on the right always have a space after (but never before). You can find and replace a space plus the mark!

How to use the "Find/Replace" function in Google Docs:
1) Open your report and click Ctrl H.
2) In the Find box, type the word or punctuation (such as dumb quotes) you want to replace.
3) In the Replace With box, type the version you want to have in your final report.
4) Click on Replace All.
All instances will be replaced at once.

Week 7 - Intro Paragraph 2 Due

Introduction presentations are today!

Did you submit your Introduction Paragraph 2 to Kevin? He will correct and return it so you can save it in your Google Drive with the other paragraphs.

Organization style
In your Introduction Paragraph 2, you mentioned how you will organize your report. There are basically two variations ...

Organize topics by Authentic & ESL Materials. Which one should be first?

  • Authentic – streaming radio, streaming TV news, Reddit, e-reading, watching movies, TV or movie trailers, online comics, etc.
  • ESL – Xreading, on-line ESL sites, ESl on Tik TokInstagramYouTube, etc.
Example:
Miho Takaku - report in Tsurumi Review 52

(scroll down about halfway)

Assembling your graduation report (part 1)

  1. Decide your organization concept.
  2. Create a new document in your Google Drive (title: Your Name Report Draft)
  3. If you have a title, type it at the top.
  4. Paste your introduction paragraphs 1 & 2 below the title.
  5. Find all of your topic paragraphs on the Lifelong English website, and copy and paste them into the document.
  6. Be sure to paste the paragraphs in the same order as your organization concept.
Your best blog post will be one of the topic paragraphs. Photos will be in black & white.
  7. Write a conclusion for your report.

Assembling your graduation report (part 2)

  1. There should be a sentence at the beginning of each topic paragraph that explains what you are going to talk about. This is explained in detail at the * section below.
  2. Tuesday class only: Add one academic quote in the appropriate place in your report. For example, if you believe Authentic Materials are essential, add a quote about it before or after one of your paragraphs that use authentic materials. [Thurs. class doesn't need to do this.]
  3. Look at each of your paragraphs and make sure they agree with the main points in your introduction. If they don’t, you need to edit them and make sure they agree with your introduction.
  4. Write a conclusion. Your conclusion will repeat some of the main ideas from your introduction, but hopefully using different words. (More about conclusions below.)
  5. Paste your Bibliography after the conclusion. This is a list of all the sources, hard sources or online sources, you used during the year. Many of your sources will be URLs. Be sure to include the source for the quotes you used in #2 above.

* Adding a sentence at the beginning of each topic paragraph

Look at Maya’s streaming radio paragraph below:

Maya - 9/15/2015
I used jango and installed it on my iPhone. I had used only YouTube before, but now I like jango better than YouTube because jango has various kinds of music and the sound is clear. I use this app everyday  when I go to school. I like Taylor swift, so I often listen to her songs on jango. I learned new vocabulary from her song,  'Shake it off!' This expression means 「ドンマイ!」「気にしないで!」in Japanese. I want to listen to various music more!

If you start your paragraph like this, it will seem too sudden or random (突然あるいはランダム). You should add one or two sentences, like ...

Streaming Radio is an authentic way to practice listening skills. There are many streaming radio apps for smart phones.

Add one or two sentences like the above to each of your topic paragraphs to explain what you’re introducing. If you already have a sentence like that, then you don’t have to do this step.

Writing a Conclusion

  • How did the topics covered in the Lifelong English Seminar help your English?
  • Will the resources you used help you in the future?
  • Which resources are most effective? Least effective?
  • Will you continue to use any of these resources? (Please try to be positive!)
  • What do you need to spend more time on?
  • How do you imagine your study habits in the future?

* The bibliography comes after the conclusion.

Read your report!
Read the entire report a few times and fix any mistakes. Does the report make sense as a whole? If not, you may need to change some words or sentences. The report needs to sound good as one complete composition.

When you’re finished, look at your word count. Do you have over 2,500 words? Is every word in your report spelled correctly? Are there any grammatical errors? Did you fix any issues in red print that Kevin found in your sentences? Did you list all sources in the correct format? If so, you’re finished! Now, send it to Kevin.

Congratulations! You will (probably) graduate this year!

To Do
1) Send your conclusion paragraph to Kevin; he will send it back to you with corrections.
2) Create the document that will be your graduation report as shown above.
3) Check everything again and again.
4) Make sure your Bibliography is complete and in alphabetical order

By next class: Put your report together! Make it perfect, including the Bibliography,! (No Thurs. class next week; Nov. 3 is Culture Day!)

Next is Report Formatting; this is important! Don't be absent!

Week 6 - Introduction Paragraph Due

Writing an Introduction to your graduation report

This week you are supposed to have submitted your first introduction paragraph. Some of the ideas you wrote about can be found in the list below.

  •  Why did you become an English major?
  •  Is your English ability good enough? Are you satisfied with your own progress?
  •  How is English important in your life?
  •  How will English be important in your future?
  •  Do you expect to use English in your career?
  •  Will you continue learning English after you graduate?
  •  Will you study English on your own (i.e., not in a class)

The paragraph above will be your first introductory paragraph. Your second paragraph will try to tie the ideas in your introduction to the topics you wrote about in class this year. The second paragraph will be a transition paragraph, like a bridge between the introduction and your other writing.

Second Introduction Paragraph

  • What are some of the topics we covered in this class?
  • How do the topics we did in class connect with the things you wrote in your introduction?
  • What are the best ways for you to study English?
  • What resources (online or paper) are the most effective? Enjoyable?
  • What resources will you probably continue to use in the future?
  • How will your topic paragraphs be organized?

These ideas don't have to be in this order. Try to make a paragraph that leads from the introductory paragraph to your topic paragraphs.

To Do:
1) The writing assignment for this week is to write your second introduction paragraph. Send it to Kevin by email. He will correct it and send it back to you. This is due next week (Oct. 27 Nov. 1).

The first and second introduction paragraphs will appear at the top of your report under the title. Your topic paragraphs (all the writing you did this year) will appear after the introduction paragraphs.

2) Your topic paragraphs in your report must be organized! Please think about how you will do that. (For example, Authentic, then ESL; or, ESL, then Authentic. You need to know this because you will mention it in your second introductory paragraph. (Scroll down to see sample order.)

3) Make a Google document in your Google Drive. Use a PC. Copy and past paragraphs from my website into your report. Fix all mistakes in red.

4) Think about a title for your report. Your title cannot be "My Graduation Report"!

5) About your bibliography entries for your blog and blog post ...
Did you do it? You must add your blog and a blog post to your bibliography.

6) Report Organization & Bibliography Checklist

Sample order of report topics:

Title

Introduction

Authentic vs ESL Materials

ESL Materials
   ESL Online Websites
   ESL on Instagram (or TikTok)
   ESL on YouTube
   Xreading
   LyricsTraining

Authentic Materials

Week 5 - Blogging in English Presentations

Today ...

You will present your comments about Blogging in English.
** Please present with no paper. Content is below.

Your paragraph about Blogging in English is due today; Oct. 13 / Oct. 18.

  • Think about all the blog posts you made last year and this year. What did you blog about? How many posts did you make? Did your blog topic change in two years?
  • Did you learn anything by blogging? For example, did you learn more about the subject of your blog? Did you learn how to write better?
  • Did blogging help you improve your English? For example, did you learn some vocabulary, grammar points or useful collocations?
  • Did blogging help you learn about online posting? For example, did you learn anything about html, photo editing, how to use templates and color schemes, how to make links or embed videos, etc?
  • Make a paragraph about Blogging in English and send it to Kevin. You will present this on Oct. 13 / Oct. 18
  • This paragraph will appear in your graduation report and your best blog post will appear with it as an example of your blog writing.

Your bibliography needs two entries for your blog:

Your blog:
Takasaki, K. (2018). My Favorite Japanese Comics, http://keigocomic.blogspot.com

Your sample blog post:
Takasaki, K. (2018). My Favorite Japanese Comics, “Vocchi Men”,  http://keigocomic.blogspot.com/2018/04/comic-vocchi-men.html

For next week ...
You will write an introduction paragraph. This paragraph should include answers to the following questions:

  •  Why did you become an English major?
  •  How is English important in your life?
  •  How will English be important in your future?
  •  Do you expect to use English in your career?
  •  Is your English ability good enough? Are you satisfied with your own progress?
  •  Will you continue learning English after you graduate?
  •  Will you study English on your own (i.e., not in a class)

You can add more information. Your paragraph should not be just a list of answers to the questions. You must write a paragraph that makes sense.

This introduction paragraph will be what you present on Oct. 27 / Nov. 1. You should try to remember as much as possible and not just read.

Introduction paragraphs are due next week; Oct. 20 / Oct. 25.
introduction presentations will be in 2 weeks; Oct. 27 / Nov. 1.

  • Introduction Paragraph (#1) is due Oct. 20 Oct. 25  (in two weeks). Send me your paragraph by email as usual and I will send it back to you by email. These paragraphs will not be posted on the website.

Introduction paragraph.

In two weeks (Oct. 20 Oct. 25) I will present how to make your complete graduation report. This is an important class, so please try not to be absent.

      Week 3 - Blogging

      Good afternoon!

A few interesting links (found on Reddit.com) recently ...

      These are quite old (sorry):

      Today ...

      1) Check to see that all blog posts are up-to-date and mistakes have been fixed.
      2) Present your thoughts to the class on Authentic vs ESL materials.
      3) Kevin will introduce the Academic Resources page on the Lifelong English website.
      4) Discuss the Input Hypothesis (インプット仮説) in class.

      Input Hypothesis / インプット仮説

Paragraph about Blogging in English due Oct. 13 Thurs / Oct. 18 Tues
      • Make a paragraph about Blogging in English and send it to Kevin's email. You will present this on Oct. 13 / Oct. 18
      • Sample comments from previous year students.
      • This paragraph will appear in your graduation report and your best blog post will appear with it as an example of your blog writing.

Example of a long quotation in an academic article:

Kevin will show you how a quotation fits into your graduation report.

      Schedule
Next week (Oct. 6 / Oct. 11) present Online Comics
Two weeks (Oct. 13 / Oct. 18) present on the Blogging in English

Today, your Blog Post #3 is due and you will present it to the class.

Please make corrections to your blog immediately after Kevin gives you the edited version! Don't wait!

      Upcoming ...
Next week, Sept. 29 / Oct. 4, you will write a paragraph and present your thoughts on Authentic vs ESL materials and tell the advantages and disadvantages of each. You can see the whiteboards we made in class below (scroll down). Mention which type of materials you prefer and why. Your paragraph will be part of your graduation thesis. You can see what people wrote in previous years, but please try to write your own ideas. Send your writing to Kevin's email!
